Tape Sculpture Head Mixed Media

Step by Step Coptic Binding

Creating Pages

Step 1

Begin by cutting 5 pages (at a time) out of the blue dictionaries.

Step 2

Line your book cover up with the top left edge of your pages.

Line your ruler up with the bottom edge of your book cover to rip the bottom edge of your 5 pages.

Step 3

Placing your front and back covers side by side measure the outside edge of your pages.

After lining your ruler up with the outside edge of your pages tear along your ruler's edge creating the first choir for your book.

Step 4

After tearing your 5 pages fold each page individually down the center creasing nicely with the outside edge of your ruler.

Step 5

Combine all 5 pages together completing your first of 7 choirs.

Step 6

Repeat steps 2 through 5 six more times to complete all 7 choirs.

Step 7

Cover choirs using folded magazine pages torn to the same size as the pages of your choir.

Be sure to cover all 7 choirs.

Step 8

Prepare to use a jig by identifying the top of each choir with a dot drawn on the center page of all 7 choirs.

Step 9

Place a choir along the center seem of a phone book. Align the top of the jig with the top of your choir. Tops are identified by the dots marked at the top of the jig and the top of each choir.

Step 10

Using a tool, called an all, poke holes along the seem of each choir. The jig has arrows where each hole should be punched. The seem of a phonebook allows for easy punching down the center of each choir and protects the table top.

Step 11

The same jig used as a guide to poke holes along the seem of all 7 choirs is used as a guide for drilling holes in the cover of your book.

Step 12

Use a clip to hold both sides of your cover together. Using the jig, as a guide, mark where the holes will be drilled along the left edge of the front cover of your book.

Step 13

With both sides of your cover clipped together use a dremal tool to drill the holes along the left edge of the front cover of your book.

Be sure to drill on top of a phone book to protect the table.

Step 14

After the holes are drilled wrap the cover of your book 10 times with your desired color binding thread. Wrapping the cover of your 10 times accounts for the proper length of thread needed to bind 2 covers and 7 choirs together.

Step 15

Cut the tip of your thread at an angle and thread your needle without tying the thread off.

Step 16

Begin binding by sewing through the bottom hole of your first choir.

Step 17

Then wrap the thread through the bottom hole of your back cover twice. The thread will then be directed back through the bottom hole of your choir before moving on to the next corresponding hole along the seem of your first choir.

Coptic stitch binding involves sewing to combine all choirs and front and back covers together. There are many more steps involved with binding your book, but these steps serve as a guide to getting started.

I am very excited to get going! We have so much to learn and do!
We will start out by looking at manipulation of space. By the end of the semester you will be a master at using space to convey meaning. We will also look at events in the world and around us and how they affect what artists produce. Get ready to learn how to bind books, collage, sew, use wax as a painting medium, silkscreen, spray paint, make stencils, and use clay to tell stories. We will be using all kinds of materials to create art- That's why it is called mixed media.

Self-Portrait/Stencil Design

The Process-

1. Check out video (Paper Monster) Look at the work. This artist will inform and inspire our
work.

2. Design 3 symbols that tell something about you. Remember, it is not o.k. to copy other artists
work. For example, if you like basketball, it is not o.k. to copy Nikes basketball ad. You could
instead, bring in an image of you playing basketball and turn it into a stencil. It is also, o.k. to
turn random action images into silhouettes. When you have chosen 3 images and turned
them into silhouettes turn them in to be graded.

3. Practice creating a pattern for the background of your piece on paper. Turn in your practice
sheet using pattern.

4. Photoshop your image on the computer and turn it into a stencil. Print out image as large as
you can (8.5 x 11) Turn the image into an overhead transparency.

5. Put an Acrylic wash on your board. Apply your pattern. Check in for a grade. (Show
me the pattern that you applied to the board)

6. Enlarge your self portrait stencil and cut out.

7. Apply self portrait image to your piece. Sign your piece in the lower right hand corner. You
are done!

5. Look at your image and start to develop an idea about what you would like to communicate.

Composition and Collage

THE PLAN!

1. Watercolor/ 3 envelopes- Remember to use more water than pigment. We are making
washes. Use complementary colors in order to create contrast.

2. Cut each envelope into 3 equal sections using the papercutter.

3. Label the back of each envelope. Each squares emphasis should be one of the elements of composition which is listed on the board in the front of the room.

4. Tape each square to a piece of paper and turn in.

5. After grading, remove the squares.

6. We will now use the squares to create one large composition using a variety of media that uses all of the elements of composition.

7. Sew magazine cover to the paper that has been provided.

8. Dry brush acylics onto the piece.

9. Stay tuned! Let's get all of this done! I will post more later!

Welcome 2nd Semester Mixed Media Students!

We are going to begin the semester looking at space and how it is used to convey idea and meaning.

We will work in the studio on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
On WEDNESDAYS we will work on blogs or have the mobile computer lab in the room.
We will spend a lot of time looking at other artists work from around the world. We will look at how our enviroment and culture influences the work we make.

Our first exercise will involve creating a strong focal point. We will experiment with a variety of media (fabric, wool, paper, wallpaper, plastic, wax, and found objects)

Our next exercise will explore the variety of ways in which we can transfer images onto a variety of surfaces.

Then we will expore the elements of composition. We will use wax as a medium and combine what you have learned from the previous exercises in order to create a quality composition.

Then we will move onto bookbinding- you will get to choose the medium you most enjoyed as your emphasis.

After bookbinding we are going to move into the anatomy of the facial structure. We will explore this in clay- but we will also combine what you have learned about wax, fabric, compostion, image transfer, etc... into our compositions.

We will have to see how quickly we move through these projects- I have quite a few other projects planned- mixed media mosaic on found objects with embroidery, found object jewelry with cold connections, etc...

What is a Cultural Icon?

A very difficult term to define, at best.
A cultural icon is an object, place, person or symbol that many members of a culture or sub-culture recognize as important to them in some way. A cultural icon is usually something that the members of a group view positively.
Other definitions might include:
A thing becomes a cultural icon when it arouses strong feelings in a member of a culture because of the fact that it is a shared cultural experience; specifically, stronger feelings than it would cause without this shared cultural experience.
A thing is a cultural icon if it has been a part of a culture for long enough that traditions and/or folklore to spring up around it.
Something that everybody in a culture knows about or is familiar with. (See Cultural Literacy).
Common examples are Uncle Sam, The Statue of Liberty, and The Liberty Bell in America. The Royal Family, The Tower of London, and Stonehenge are examples of cultural icons in England (perhaps not the best; /msg me if you have better suggestions).
Any number of things have been called cultural icons at one time or another; noteworthy are the inordinate numbers of people, cartoon characters, bands, and imaginary characters that have been called cultural icons. I am somewhat wary of calling Britney Spears or Homer Simpson cultural icons, although a case could be made for Elvis Presley or Mickey Mouse. If you find yourself referring to humans and human-like creatures as cultural icons, you might want to consider using the terms 'star' or 'role model' instead.

Grading Requirements are posted in the room:

1st grade- 10 images that will be used to make your lay-out. Remember, it is not o.k. to use other artists work. You must design your own images! Plagarism is not allowed! Stay away from TRITE images as per the presentation last week. Please e-mail me, when you have the images uploaded with the url sites attached.

2nd grade- Lay-out and design grade. Using the images you have printed out design your lay-out paying particular attention to the positive and negative space. Get an overhead transparency, move images around in order to design your space. Make sure that you let me see you working on your lay-out and design so I can give you a grade.

3r grade- Using the grid system in order to enlarge a design from small to large. Divide your window length and width by 3 and cut a piece of paper on the paper cutter. Break the small paper into 16 sections. Do the same with the large paper. Use the grid to enlarge the design you have created. After you have enlarged your design, use watercolors so you can see how the colors you have chosen will look in glass

Fill in your design with cut glass. Let the adhesive dry and then grout!
